Phonics

We have been learning a lot of sounds in Class 1. So far we have learnt
m, a, s, d, t, I, n, p, g, o, c, k, u, b. I have given each child a list of the rhymes we use to help learn the sounds and form the letters.
We are learning how to sound out simple words and blend them together to read. Your child may bring home a reading book with first words in. Help them to sound each letter, then practise saying each sound and blending them together to make a word. S a m sssssss Aaaaaaa mmmmmm Sam!
I will not be giving any new sounds until I feel we are a little more secure with the sounds we have learnt so far.
Thank you for your support
Mrs Sheppard

Stars and space

Thank you so much for the amazing star catchers children have been bringing in.
This week one of the class thought it would be a good idea to turn our role play area into a space station so work has begun on that today. If you can make something at home to help, such as make a satellite or a planet or a control panel that would be fantastic!
If you have any books about space at home then we’d love to have a look.
This week we have been learning the sounds ar as in car, or as in fork, oa as in goat and igh as in night, we have given you more cards to help learn these at home. We have been practising reading the words my, for and too.
In maths we have been looking at odd and even numbers and estimating before counting.

How to catch a star!

This week in Class 1 we have been learning about stars. We began with the nursery rhyme Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. We had lots of discussions about what stars are. These discussions led onto shooting stars, we discovered they were actually pieces of rock burning in our earths atmosphere.
We are now trying to invent a machine to catch our own star after receiving a letter from Boy asking for our help. Can you design or make a star catching machine?
We have learnt the sounds ai, ee, short oo and long oo and the words with, was, and will.
In maths we have been learning to estimate and count in twos.
