Mrs Clough – Baby News!

We are delighted to announce the safe arrival of Mrs Clough’s baby girl, Mila! Both mum and baby are doing well and everyone is so excited to meet the new arrival. A huge congratulations from everyone at Baschurch Primary School!

30/01/26

Good Afternoon,
Spellings for this week are now all on Spelling Shed and book changes and new sound of the week should all go home as normal next week. Just a reminder that it will be Mrs Foster teaching in Y1 on Monday.
Thank you so much for all of your support, understanding and kindness over the last few months! It has been so lovely getting to know all of the children in Year 1 and I have very much enjoyed teaching them so far this year. They are in brilliant hands going forward and I look forward to catching up with them during my next visit.
Mrs Clough

Gymnastics – Year 1

Today in PE we were focusing on developing quality when performing and linking shapes. The children were working in pairs to create different shapes and working hard to improve each shape by extending different parts of their body.

6th January 2026

All the children have come back into the classroom in great form today and we have had a lovely start back after the Christmas break!

New sounds have been sent home along with a Curriculum Letter for the term and a new Homework Menu (stuck into homework books).
Your child will also come home with their new RWI book on Thursday. This will be the book we have been reading in class this week. Their new ‘shiny’ RWI book will come home next Monday. The children did so well in their Christmas assessments and we are really proud of how much progress they are making with their reading and writing! Your child will now have moved/changed RWI colour as they have all progressed with their reading. This will be evident when they bring home their new book on Thursday.

Wellies!
If your child wants to walk/come to school in a pair of wellies whilst the weather is so cold and unsettled this is absolutely fine. They can wear these at break time and lunch time also to save their school shoes getting ruined and their socks and feet getting cold and wet. Could you please just ensure that they also have a pair of normal school shoes in their bag to change into for whilst they are in the classroom/school.

Many Thanks,
Mrs Clough

Y1 – 18/12/25

As tomorrow is our last day before Christmas, all children are welcome to wear a Christmas jumper if they would like. We will still be having PE as normal so do make sure that your child is in normal PE kit in addition to their Christmas jumper.

We will be having a small class Christmas party and if time allows we may watch ‘Arthur Christmas’. Please let me know if you would not like your child to watch the film so that I can make alternative arrangements.

As the end of term is now practically upon us, I just want to thank you all for your support and understanding this term. It has been such a joy getting to know all of the children and we have had a busy but wonderful Autumn term in Year 1.

There will be some spellings on Spelling Shed for the Christmas break and new reading books have been sent home today but please just enjoy the festivities and lots of family time.

Merry Christmas from all of us in Year 1.
Mrs Clough 🙂

Maths – Y1

Year 1 Maths (PV within 20)

We have recently started looking at numbers within 20. Throughout this unit, we and will learn to identify and correctly record numbers 11-20 focusing on the amount of tens and ones each number is showing. Children will be encouraged to count on from ten to find a total which will support their recording of each number as they begin to realise that all numbers 11-20 have one ten and several ones depending on the number. E.g. 15 – one ten and 5 ones. Children will gradually learn how to find one more and one less of a given number to 20 and record missing numbers on a number 0-20.

Lots of practice over the Christmas holidays would really support your child’s learning in the classroom. Many children are recording ’15’ as ’51’ so we will be working hard on developing their place value knowledge during the first half of the Spring term. We will also be learning how to record numbers 11-20 as words, compare numbers using language such as ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’ and order numbers based on their size. Children should start to understand that all of these numbers have the same amount of tens but have a different amount of ones. This will support them when discussing the value of these numbers.  E.g. “17 is greater than 15 because it has more ones”  or “18 has 1 ten and 8 ones”.

Key questions to support your child at home:

  • Can you show me 14 in three different ways?
  • How many tens and ones does that number have?
  • Can you write these numbers in numerals and words?
  • How much more than 10 is 18?
  • Is 20 greater than 19 or less than 19?
  • What is the same about finding one more and one less?
  • When finding one more and one less, which digit changes?
  • Can you use a number line to find one more and one less?

Reading books!

Due to the pantomime, all reading books will be changed tomorrow!

As we are coming to the end of term, your child will come home with a ‘generic’ reading book that matches their current colour band instead of their usual RWI books. This will give us time to assess your child’s reading progress and update groups ahead of January.

Please expect a general read to come home tomorrow. This will then be changed next Thursday (18th Dec) so that your child can have a book to read over the Christmas break.

We will then collect these in January and continue as normal.

I will also be collecting Homework Books on Monday to take a look at any homework that has been completed this half term. These will also be returned in January with a fresh homework menu stuck in.

Many Thanks,
Mrs Clough
