Maths

This week we have been learning the column method for addition and subtraction with increasingly large numbers, estimating to approximate and using the inverse to check answers.

English

We have been focussing on subordinating conjunctions. We have started reading ‘Inventor McGregor’ which will give us many writing opportunities, including diary entries and narrative writing.

PE

We have started the Golden Mile and continued Skip2bfit, where this week we had 8 personal bests!

This week we’ve been busy making our junk model inventions and what a range of inventions we have had, from a litter picking kite to a milk bottle floatation device to a hair bobble dispenser!

In english we have learnt about expanded nouns, prepositions and fronted adverbials and have started to apply these in our independent writing.

In maths we have continued our work on place value and have been concentrating on rounding this week.

In other news we have started our Skip2bfit personal challenge and our swimming lessons!

Year 5 Autumn Term 2018

This week we have continued our inventors topic by mind mapping the qualities of an inventor. From this we created a job advert and then all wrote a letter applying for the job. All candidates have successfully made it to the interview stage!

In maths we have continued our place value unit and have been learning about: comparing and ordering numbers, place value up to a million, counting in 10s, 100s, 1000s, 10,000s and 100,000s.

In English we have been learning about pronouns and expanded noun phrases. We have been identifying these features and then using them in our own writing.

End of week 1!

What a busy week we have had and thank you all for connecting to dojos! I have been so impressed with some of the effort that has gone into the children’s work already.

In school bags today should be:
> reading book and record (many of you have been reading regularly at home this week and recording it on your reading records – keep it up!) I’ll also be sending home some question starters similar to what we will be using in guided reading to improve comprehension skills.
These should come to school EVERY DAY.
