Dear parents and carers,
I am writing to apologise that the proposed transition schedule for September 2020 Reception class has caused several concerns with our families.
Thank you for writing in and letting us know what works for you and what doesn’t; we always make decisions in what we believe to be the best interests of the children, but we also always take into account the parents points of view and act upon these.
The reasoning behind the staggered start was based on a number of factors: We have found that the current Reception class have found returning to school mornings only very tiring after being in lockdown; we wanted to keep class numbers low while we embedded a routine which still may include elements of social distancing and increased hygiene; we wanted to allow the class teacher to get to know the needs of your child and to make sure that the first experience of school after 5 months out of an educational setting was as positive as it could be. It is new territory for us all, but children at this young age can find school overwhelming and tiring, even if they have previously been in nursery. With this cohort having been at home since March, we anticipate some anxiety when separating from family. We are a very caring school and always have great success with our new Reception class; the teacher and TA are both so experienced and are planning some very special lessons and well-being activities to ensure that this year is no different in that respect.
Having listened to concerns, we understand that the transition period is too long for working parents so the first week and a half, as per the schedule, will remain the same. Then from 14th September (which was the part that is different to usual due to coronavirus), you can bring your child full time. We would like to give you the option between 14th September and 25th September to collect your child at lunchtime if you wish to do so or follow the schedule.
Please allow time in the mornings to drop off your children. Following government guidelines, we are going to be operating a staggered start and finish in September. The Reception class will be let in at 9:15 through the new green gate and will leave at 3pm. On arrival there will be a queuing system in place as there is now. You will come up to the classroom in turn and be greeted by the teacher and TA. The children will be asked to wash their hands when they come in.
The children will all be wearing uniform when they come back, but on PE days, they will be asked to come into school in their PE kit to avoid changing in school.
Thank you again for your feedback. Please note that school staff do not look at Mummies of Baschurch Facebook group, so if you have any other questions or queries, please email or phone us as this is the most effective way of communicating with us.
